What Jane Austen Novel Should You Read?

Jane Austen is the queen of romance, so who better to pick up when you feel the need to celebrate the month of romance with a book. So if your looking for a Jane Austen book here’s what I would recommend.

For the Mystery Lover:

I recommend Northanger Abbey. This book is a satire of the gothic novel. So it does have some of the classic mystery elements and will keep you interested if only to laugh at Jane Austen poking fun at the gothic novel. Plus it has one of my favorite heroes, Henry Tilney.

“Strange things may be generally accounted for if their cause be fairly searched out.”

For the “Ugh not another romance novel” Reader:

I recommend Sense and Sensibility. I’ve always felt like the romances in this novel come secondary to the relationship between the sisters. So if you’re in the mood for a good sisterly relationship this is the book for you.

“I wish, as well as everybody else, to be perfectly happy; but, like everybody else, it must be in my own way.”

For the Person Looking for a Comforting Reread:

I recommend Pride and Prejudice.  If you’re looking to reread a Jane Austen novel this one is always a good one. Every time I read it I make so many new discoveries and so many new connections.

“I could easily forgive his pride, if he had not mortified mine.”

For the Romantic Comedy Lover:

I recommend Emma. Emma is that and more. Emma is a heroine that is completely annoying, yet she is also completely compelling.

“If I loved you less, I might be able to talk about it more.”

For the Jane Austen fan:

I recommend Mansfield Park. If you’re like me then this is your least reread Jane Austen book. But still worth rereading. Hopefully, I will be rereading this book soon. I think that this is the most different of Jane Austen’s novels but it is always a good read because of it.

“I was quiet, but I was not blind.”

For Anyone Who is New to Jane Austen:

Persuasion is the book you should start with. It isn’t quite as long as her other novels but it has some of the most romantic lines in all of her novels. So if your looking for a good romance for February this is a good one to pick up.

“I can listen no longer in silence. I must speak to you by such means as are within my reach. You pierce my soul. I am half agony, half hope. Tell me not that I am too late, that such precious feelings are gone for ever. I offer myself to you again with a heart even more your own than when you almost broke it, eight years and a half ago.”
